The trio comprising Marco Colonna, Esmeralda Sella and Francesco Cigana presents an original live musical accompaniment for the silent film ’A Santanotte (Italy, 1922) by cinema pioneer Elvira Notari. The project has been created specifically for this occasion: an open, site-specific score that engages with the film’s imagery and the tradition of the film concert.

Marco Colonna

A clarinettist and improviser active in contemporary music, jazz and experimental music, he brings an extended timbral language and a strong narrative element to his performances.

Esmeralda Sella

A pianist and sound researcher, she works with instruments, objects and acoustic materials, exploring sound as a physical and spatial phenomenon.

Francesco Cigana

A percussionist and composer active in improvisation, sound practices and interdisciplinary projects, he develops musical devices that intertwine rhythm, materiality and collective listening.

SYNOPSIS

Nanninella, a waitress in a café, supports her father Giuseppone with her wages. He is a drunkard who mistreats her and takes advantage of her kindness. Courted by Tore, the young woman would like to become engaged to him,
but her father prefers to promise her in marriage to Carluccio...

Screening organised in collaboration with the Cineteca Nazionale. The restoration was carried out in 2008
by CSC–Cineteca Nazionale, George Eastman House, and Associazione Orlando at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in Bologna, as part of the project Non solo dive. Women Pioneers of Italian Cinema.
