Yervant Gianikian has died in Milan at the age of 84. We remember with gratitude his participation in the BFFB in 2024, on the occasion of the Lifetime Achievement Award he was presented with. His attendance was, for us, a moment of great human and cultural significance. Together with Angela Ricci Lucchi, through his work he succeeded in restoring to history, to images, and to the archaeology of images—reimagined for the contemporary world—an extraordinary power of memory and testimony, leaving a profound mark on contemporary cinema. We cherish the memory of his rigour, his sensitivity, and his desire to invent cinema.
To Yervant Gianikian we offer our sincere admiration and our grateful thoughts.
Farewell, Yervant! It was a privilege to know you.
